If Men Were Angels No Government Would Be Necessary

Posted by | December 7th, 2011

“If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself. A dependence on the people is, no doubt, the primary control on the government.”

– James Madison (Federalist #51)

“The preservation of the sacred fire of liberty, and the destiny of the Republican model of Government, are justly considered as deeply, perhaps as finally staked, on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.” – George Washington (First Inaugural Address – 1789)

What a beautiful and true quote from James Madison. He must of been a very wise person indeed. Thanks for sharing it.

You’re very welcome Jackie! James Madison was very wise, and very brilliant, for sure! I am very proud to call James Madison one of OUR Founding Fathers!
